Cubism is not a reality you can take in your hand. It’s more like a perfume, in front of you, behind you, to the sides, the scent is everywhere but you don’t quite know where it comes from.

— Pablo Picasso

CUBISM: A style of art which aims to show all of the possible viewpoints of a person or an object all at once. It is called Cubism because the items represented in the artworks like they are made out of cubes and other geometrical shapes. Cubism challenged all the conventional ways of painting by totally shifting the paradigm of dimension and reality. Although it appears abstract, it is based on real life.

Cubism was a hard portrait to make for a girl who went to art school. I have never painted or thought about anything like this up to this point. All of my professional training revolved around studying the human figure, how to expertly "look" and render. Even then, I didn't expect it to be as much of a mental challenge as it was.

At first my thought was that I needed to decode the formula for Cubism was, but was left frustrated and discouraged. Finally I told myself that there were 6 empty canvases behind me and if I mess up, I can simply start over. It turned out to be much less about a formula and more about letting go of the perfectionist inside along with some past baggage. Finally, the mental wall started coming down and the wave of excitement charged in. This was literally the first time since my professional training that I painted intuitively and unprogrammed some of my training.

The most brilliant thing about cubism is the concept as a whole (pun intended!). Cubism regards the 3D world as we know it in a spatial context. Canvases are 2D surfaces and some artists can achieve an exceptional 3D perspective, but no matter how good an artist replicates reality, it doesn't account for the full 360 degrees of the subject/ the space it uses/ the environment. Thus, the concept of Cubism is related closer to sculpture rather than traditional paintings.

The result from painting multiple perspectives of Christ's face, shoulders, halo, hair, hands, chest, etc., was massive volume and depth in comparison to the series. His body and soul expand far beyond the perimeters of the four walls of the frame, much like Christ himself. This portrait particularly highlights his strong, powerful, limitless nature. Also, we all have a toroidal field of magnetic energy stemming from our hearts and expands out of our bodies. I can’t even imagine how great Jesus's field was. It's something that we (most likely) won't fully recognize or experience till we are in heaven, but it's fun to imagine. I think that what 3D Cubism is to 2D painting, Jesus's energy is to ours

ART HISTORY NOTE: This art movement was established around 1907. Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso innovated this concept and became a highly influential style. It revolutionized art and brought a new perspective to the world that inspired art across every field. It is considered to be one of the first Abstract art movements yet also a realistic movement as well. It lent itself to a whole new vision and concept that continues to inspire artists today.
